The PS2 Review

Elvis has seemingly been dipped in the mud...

The Graphics

Wow, uh, I had no idea the PS2 was capable of such graphical prowess. Sure, it's not as impressive as the Cube version but it is definitely impressive on it's own as many doubted that it could be brought over to the PS2. The main difference is that textures are worse, effects are muddier and the finer details throughout the game are lacking. Basically whatever graphical flaws in relation to the rest of the RE series I mentioned in the Cube review are enhanced here due to the slightly inferior graphics.

Graphics: 8.5

The Story

The most damaging aspect of the storyline is that there is no Umbrella and the T and G-Virsuses only get a slight mention near the beginning. The game actually feels like it's trying to completely forget about Leon's past until Ada and Krauser come into the picture. By that point, though, the game has already established the fact that not only is this not a real Resident Evil game but that the plausibility of the events that occur is non-existant. The previous RE games had the whole "this COULD happen, but it likely never will." while Four has a feeling of "Jesus Louse Christ, I feel like I'm in a bad, B movie" at times. The only thing that saves the storyline of the game is incredible writing and the inclusion of at least some mention of Wesker's conspiracy.

Story: 7.5

The Gameplay

What really makes this game great is the gameplay. Whatever short comings that the graphics and storyline present, the gameplay shatters them. The controls are FINALLY easy to learn and the aiming system is intuitive and easy to control. Whether it's the execution of the action commands or doing battle with ten Ganados the controls are tight and responsive. The large variety of weapons makes for even more fun when mowing down Ganados and treasures strewn throughout the game make exploring fun as well. All in all it's a near perfect package.

Gameplay: For control 10 for the game itself 10

Replay Value

The PS2's extras do shit all to increase the replay value. Every 'extra' was severely fucked up or fits about as well as a square peg into a round hole. The exclusive weapon the PRL 412 is the worst weapon in both games and barely even worth trying to get. Seperate Ways is even worse. It furthers my belief that Capcom has no idea how to write a proper story as it just doesn't fit into the storyline. You'll notice as much when there are points where you KNOW Ada is behind Leon in the castle yet she's somehow able to pass him and even set up traps for him to solve that he would have already solved. Not to mention how nobody knows that she's there yet she's fucking CAPTURED in the village. Yessir, if you want a job working for storyline development at Capcom...learn to write stories that are plot holes incarnate...I thought that the RE series had escaped all the major plot holes...then Seperate Ways rolled along.

Replay Value: 6

Overall Grade: 8
