Version 1.11b
Once you log on to Battle.net, and if a newer Starcraft patch is available, it will be automatically downloaded, its progress indicated by an orange bar. Once download is complete Starcraft restarts with the patch applied. You can see the changes made and bugs fixed by the patch applied and previous patches by clicking "Details>>>" when the selection comes up, just before you restart Starcraft. The current patch version is seen at the bottom right of the main selection screen once you start up Starcraft. You can only play on Battle.net with the latest version of the patch.
You need at least a mouse for operating Starcraft. The pointer is shown as a green arrow on your screen. Keyboards are extra, but are helpful for hotkeying and shortcuts. The commands menu is accessed on the bottom right of the screen, in the grid of nine boxes. That means a unit or structure can have up to 9 different commands, but no more.
MoveMoving a unit or structure(Terran only) to a place will cause it to move in a straight line(or, in case of a land unit, the shortest path) to that point without stopping. Even when attacked, that unit will ignore attacks until it reaches the destination or dies. This is made an autocommand if you right-click on an empty spot on the map.
Hotkey: M
Clicking Attack will cause the cursor to turn into a red oval with a dot in the center. Click on a specific unit or structure next will cause it to attack that unit or structure, and ignore everything else. This is made an autocommand if you right-click on an enemy unit or structure.
Hotkey: A
Stop will cause a unit to ... well, stop. Stop only lasts for an instant, and if the unit is under enemy fire, it will only pause for an instant before starting to fight back again. Stop can also be used on defensive structures such as Missile Turrets, Photon Cannons, Sunken Colonies, or Spore Colonies. The command issued on those also only last for a slight moment, and need to be repeated often if you want them to stop firing back at an enemy.
Hotkey: S
Holding position will cause a unit to freeze in place and not budge from that position no matter what the circumstance. Melee units are vitually helpless unless attacked upon by another melee unit, in which case they will fight back from their spot, but ranged units will fire from that position upon any intruders.
Hotkey: H
Clicking Patrol and then clicking on another spot will cause that unit to walk back and forth between its current position and the indicated spot. If any units come within sight range of the patrolling unit, it will attempt to attack the intruder.
Hotkey: P
Attack-Moving is a very helpful command, and it should replace the Move command totally except under special circumstances. Attack-Move is used by clicking Attack and then left-clicking an empty spot without an unit or structure. Units Attack-Moving to the indicated spot will fight back when attacked, and attack enemies that come within their sight range. But if enemies are eliminated en route, the units will resume their course to their destination.
Hotkey: A + Left Click
Selecting units, and then right-clicking on a unit will cause them to Follow that unit. Units following will move when the unit being followed moves out of a certain range, and will more or less be on their tail unless sight is lost. This can be done by an Observer to an enemy unit, to see where they go without taking control of the Observer all the time. Units following an unit will not attack or strike back when attacked.
